BLUE SQUARE EVENTS
For 2021 we have are delighted to offer some intimate quality events, incorporating poetry and music together with the ArtheartHQ Blue Square Exhibition.
The competition’s theme is set around the colour BLUE. The colour blue appears somewhere in every work in the exhibition. All artists were asked to submit in 407 x 407mm (16” x 16”) formats. People of all ages and stages in artmaking, from all areas of art practice, were encouraged to participate. The Blue Square Art Competition is all about inclusiveness.
Mark Tredinnick OAM will launch the exhibition this year. He is a Bowral local and an internationally acclaimed poet and essayist.
This year our Blue Square judge is Zoe Young, also a Bowral local. Zoe is a decorated artist having won the Portia Geach Women's Art Prize (2018), the Calleen Art Prize (2020), and the NSW Women’s Leadership Rural Scholarship (2021). Her work was featured in the Sydney Contemporary Art Fair (2018), THE Sulman Prize (2019) and the Archibald Prize Exhibition (2013, 2017).
On Opening Night Harpist Louise Bellwill be featured. We are delighted that Louise will return for the CanAssist Member evening.
Kjell Goyer and his Jazz Trio Stolen Moments will be featured in the gallery. The Trio is joined by vocalist Tasha Hodges. This event will be intimate and relaxed. We will transform the gallery into a private soirée venue, where the audience will be seated at tables with light refreshments provided.
As part of the program of events celebrating this year’s Blue Square Art exhibition at The Gallery, ArtheartHQpresents What the Light Tells: An evening of poetry, song & art, featuring local award-winning poets Tegan Gigante, Peter Ramm, Alison Whitelock & Mark Tredinnick, and new music—settings of Mark’s poems—from “Teddychook” (Russell Tredinnick & band).
Mark Tredinnick will also be presenting a Poetry Workshop What Water Does to Rock -a practical and inspiring workshop. Participants will have a chance to workshop, with Mark and the other participants, a poem they bring along, or one they make in class. It will suit anyone who writes poetry and wants to do it better, anyone who wishes they knew a bit more than they do about how a poem works, anyone who once loved poetry and wishes to fall for it again.
Sonja Millis, the organiser of the event is holding an informal evening Friday 5 June. This is a rare opportunity to catch up with her, outside of Arthead. Sonja was inspired to begin this competition as a tribute to the legacy of Bob Millis, who was an artist and art teacher who left us in 2017. Both Sonja and Bob have always felt a calling to provide a safe space to nurture and encourage people to participate in fine art.
It is essential that you book for any of these events in compliance with current NSW Health Advice.
